Standing Desk

Object design

The Standing Desk is a studio experiment that was designed to answer the client Russ Cooper, who represents the ACSD (accessibility center for students with disabilities). This organization accommodates students' needs. He explained that the ACSD has to accommodate many students during exams, sometimes more than 400 students per day. Thus, Russ presented us with the challenge of designing an accessible examination desk. Our goal is to make an environment as comfortable as possible and to provide an environment for concentration.

This standing desk is a proof of concept trying to make an adjustable desk without using a motor or a hand crank. The design is based on Otaman's design. The desk is made of plywood and four screws; it was tinted and has a protective coat applied. After designing the pieces, I used the CNC to cut the pieces and the saw for the smaller pieces.

Concept and Process

The project that I had taken up was quite challenging
and required a combination of woodwork skills,
object design, and physical work efficiency. One of
the biggest challenges I faced during the design
phase was that there were multiple solutions to the
problems we encountered, such as how to join two
pieces. It was quite a task to sift through all the
options and then choose the best one that would
work in the present and future. The debates
regarding the best solution cost us a lot of time, but
the solutions did not inconvenience us down the
production line.

Because of this constraint, time was another
significant challenge we faced. I rescoped the project
only to be the standing desk as I would not have time
to add the accessibility accommodation to the desk.
Despite all the plans and designs in place, I had to
work around the limited hours at the wood workshop.
Thus, I had to ensure that every work session was
efficient and prioritize our schedules accordingly.
Despite the challenges, I completed the project, and
the result was satisfying.
